Augusta National
The Masters
By Danny Smith
All eyes are on Augusta National, this week, and Tiger Wood’s bid to win a fifth Green Jacket at the Masters Tournament. The stage is set for one of the all-time great Masters, with so many of the world’s elite peaking for the first major of the season.
Golfers worldwide know Augusta, Georgia, for one thing: the Masters, and the Augusta National course on which the renowned tournament is played each April. The course is arguably the most famous in the world and undoubtedly the most exclusive.
Tiger Woods' victory at Bay Hill last week was his 72nd on the PGA Tour. For the 36-year-old, that’s two victories for each year of his life. The Win at Bay Hill has sparked conversation as to weather Tiger is prepared to dominate golf leaderboards moving forward.
Woods has won four Green Jackets, although his last victory came in 2005. He has played here twice since returning from the scandal that knocked his career off the rails, finishing fourth on both occasions. In the circumstances, these stand as remarkable performances, given the state of his game at the time, and the turmoil that surrounded his private life.
Woods caused some controversy recently when he cried off injured during the final round the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral. The former world no. 1 put paid to the predicable speculation about his general health by participating in the Tavistock Cup team event and then showcasing his well-being and excellent form at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill tourney, which he has now a record won seven times!
Tiger is now back up to sixth in the world rankings, his odds to win the Masters have reduced and he is the bookies' favorite. With Nicklaus’ record of 18 major victories seemingly out of reach for the newest golfing resident of Jupiter, Florida, all eyes have become more rigidly focused on those who represent the Tiger generation.
Woods' play at Bay Hill confirmed his status as the man who truly pushes the needle in terms of TV ratings, and his smile as the final putt went down showed to the world that he is where he needs to be: healthy and happy - and in pursuit of his passion of being the world’s number one golfer.
Questions to Consider:
1. Do you believe Tiger Wood’s Performance in recent events can justify how he will play under the microscope of the most prestigious golf tournament of the year? Do you feel Tiger is more prepared for this tournament due to the magnitude of the event?
2. If Tiger successfully dominates the field during the four-day tournament at Augusta and wins the Masters tournament, does this define his career as bouncing back?
3. Will a sixth Master’s win, the first since 2005, improve Tiger’s image? Tiger has been faced with scrutiny because of his personal life fumbles. Can a win at the Master’s begin to re-pave a new path for the previous number one golfer?
4. Do you feel the controversy that has surrounded Tiger Woods has been the cause for his excuses that have pulled him out of events? Tiger, before being faced with the scandal, had pulled out of events only twice due to physical purposes. Since the scandal, Tiger has removed himself from six different events due to injuries or sore muscles.
5. Will Tiger catch Jack Nicklaus’ current record of 18 major championships? Considering this is opinion based with no correct answer, please use examples to support your answer.
1. Do you believe Tiger Wood’s Performance in recent events can justify how he will play under the microscope of the most prestigious golf tournament of the year? Do you feel Tiger is more prepared for this tournament due to the magnitude of the event?
ReplyDeleteI believe that Tiger's recenter performances certainly makes him a front runner for his upcoming tournament, but every tournament must be treated separately. Tiger could end up choking at the last minute and fail miserably or his performance could be on par with his others and he can win. Ultimately I think Tiger wants to win because he is a competitor, golf is his sport and the more he wins the more desirable he is for more sponsorships and good press.
2. If Tiger successfully dominates the field during the four-day tournament at Augusta and wins the Masters tournament, does this define his career as bouncing back?
Yes I believe a win for Tiger will mean he has succeeded in his comeback. Like I said above Tiger can take every piece of good press thrown his way. Besides there is a point where we need to separate career and personal life, just because he is a recovering sex addict doesnt mean he cant play golf well.
3. Will a sixth Master’s win, the first since 2005, improve Tiger’s image? Tiger has been faced with scrutiny because of his personal life fumbles. Can a win at the Master’s begin to re-pave a new path for the previous number one golfer?
There will always be people who like Tiger Woods, hate Tiger Woods, like how he plays the game, but not condone any of his actions. It all really depends on his game, if he continues to win then he is paving the way to be the number one golfer, if he gets beat, then its a harder climb for him to make.
Tiger is more susceptible to criticism, people want to see him fail, if he doesn't bring his A game, he shouldnt compete. Truly for Tiger he needs to come in first or it wont matter to the press or the people. It's just life when you mess up that bad you are going to be scrutinized a lot more than if you were still squeaky clean.
5. Will Tiger catch Jack Nicklaus’ current record of 18 major championships? Considering this is opinion based with no correct answer, please use examples to support your answer.
Honestly I have no idea, it all depends on how he plays Nicklaus is leading Tiger in three out of four majors, US Open, PGA Championship, and Masters, both are tied with Open Championships (3 each). So for starters a win at the Masters puts him one behind in that tournament, and he should win the next open championship to overtake him there. That'll make him two behind Nicklaus, he will need to win at least two more championships to tie him. If he can continue on this momentum its extremely plausible.
1. Do you believe Tiger Wood’s Performance in recent events can justify how he will play under the microscope of the most prestigious golf tournament of the year? Do you feel Tiger is more prepared for this tournament due to the magnitude of the event?
ReplyDeleteI think that with anything in life, you can be the most prepared human being but there is no definite outcome at the end of the day. I’m sure Tiger has focused more on this event due to its reputation of being the most prestigious tournaments of the year, but there is no saying that just because of his performance in past events that there will be the same outcome.
2. If Tiger successfully dominates the field during the four-day tournament at Augusta and wins the Masters tournament, does this define his career as bouncing back?
If he does successfully dominate the tournament then yes I do believe it would fall under the category of bouncing back. Tiger has faced a lot of scrutiny over the recent years for issues that involve his personal life that have also taken effect on his professional career. Regardless of the outcome of the Augusta and Master’s he will still be recognized as one of the all-time greatest golfers.
3. Will a sixth Master’s win, the first since 2005, improve Tiger’s image? Tiger has been faced with scrutiny because of his personal life fumbles. Can a win at the Master’s begin to re-pave a new path for the previous number one golfer?
As much as a win will most likely improve Tiger’s image for the people who follow his stories from the media, I’m not sure I agree with this having so much to do with the impact of his reputation. For fans that’s truly follow Tiger for his pure talent I believe they have already not allowed his personal mistakes to influence who he is as an athlete. However, society has molded into a shape where your success can eliminate any preconceived judgments, which in my eyes is completely fake, but I do wish Tiger the best of luck with a win in the upcoming tournament.
I’m sure being surrounded by the controversy has made Tiger pull out of events more, because the spotlight is on him in a different way than it was prior to the scandal. Although, pulling himself out of events probably isn’t the easiest thing to do for someone who has focused so much of their time to compete, it’s probably smart if Tiger doesn’t feel his performance will be up to par since if he doesn’t place as well as before he will eventually fall completely off the map.
5. Will Tiger catch Jack Nicklaus’ current record of 18 major championships? Considering this is opinion based with no correct answer, please use examples to support your answer.
Ummmmmmmmmmmm……. I second whatever Ed just said.
1.Tiger has always been a great player under pressure, this isn’t the first time he has been under the microscope in is career. I feel that Tiger is definitely more trying to leave his personal problems in the past and moving on with his career. After his surgeries Tiger is now back to his old self and will hopefully perform.
ReplyDelete2.I that people will define this as bouncing back in his career. Winning the Masters is a huge tournament out of the many that the golfers play. Winning this will put Tiger back in his winning spot and will hopefully lead to many other wins.
3.I think that it will improve his image in the golf world but Tiger has had a set image for a while. Winning will definitely help him but in the long run he has definitely made his name known in other ways over the last few years. However Tiger will also always be known as one of the worlds best golfers, with or without his own personal problems
4.I feel as though yes and no. I am sure his life controversy has made a large impact on his life but Tiger was also having problems with his leg before this. Either way pulling out of the events harms him and in no way his helping him make money. Scandals like this take a large toll on people, I am by no means supporting what he did, but im sure losing his kids and wife made an impact on his physical and mental health.
5.There’s a definite possibility that Tiger could catch Jack but he would have to get his life back on track with a serious winning streak to accomplish this. It won’t be easy, but if anyone can do it Tiger can.
1. I do think that his past performance justify that he will play well in the Masters. His past few rounds have been consistent while the ones prior he could put one or two things together but never put his whole game together. He has since done that with his win at the Arnold Palmer invitational. With his win there he has done something that he hasn’t been able to do since his confrontation with his wife and that is winning a tournament. In terms of his preparation I think he rises to the occasion of the Masters and that has not changed. If my memory is correct I believe that he was in the running at last year’s Masters and he made it to the final round. He has always risen to the event and this year’s Masters is no different especially with a win under his belt his confidence must be high.
ReplyDelete2. I would say that by winning the Masters that he is bouncing back. If he wins the Masters than makes back to back wins for him and a major event as well. By winning he will be back to where he was before the confrontation with his wife because before then he wasn’t winning every event but he was contending and by winning the Masters he proves that he can win a high pressure tournament just like when he was younger and not faced with a tough situation off of the course.
3. By winning a sixth Master’s win Tiger is paving a new path for himself. He has proven that he can overcome adversity with his person issues and to fight to get back to his former glory. With his new path he will have new knowledge that he didn’t prior to his personal issues that could benefit him both on and off the course.
4. I think that the controversies offer a small part as to why he has backed out but I don’t think that the controversies are the only reason. Tiger is getting older and doing the same motion every time he swings can take a toll on his body. But for him I’m guessing that he backs out because he knows he is still not back to his former self and that by playing would only hurt him more than it would help and also that his position in the public’s eye made it easier to back out than stay because for him it would be easier to leave and work on the issue than push it and be out for an extended period of time like after he hurt his knee.
5. With 14 major wins under his belt and his current improvements as of late it does seem possible for Tiger to win four more majors. At age 46 Jack Nicklaus won his 18th major. Tiger is only 36 and is starting to make a comeback or so it seems and after the Masters if he wins he will only need three more majors to tie Nicklaus’ record. Tiger still has 10 years to win four majors and if this surge back to his former glory is for real his chances are growing with every win.
1. Do you believe Tiger Wood’s Performance in recent events can justify how he will play under the microscope of the most prestigious golf tournament of the year? Do you feel Tiger is more prepared for this tournament due to the magnitude of the event?
ReplyDeleteI don't really follow the sport of golf to predict or determine how I believe Woods will perform in this tournament. Clearly his talent has brought him to where he stands today, so I expect he will impress and keep his fans content. I would also assume that Tiger has done nothing but prepare for this event due to its size and importance.
2. If Tiger successfully dominates the field during the four-day tournament at Augusta and wins the Masters tournament, does this define his career as bouncing back?
Yes, definitely. Love him or hate him, this man has been through A LOT. I think the cheating scandal two years back was the low part of his life, and at some point a person will inevitably bounce back. I don't condone cheating by any means, but I also separate work from a social life. Given that golf is Woods' career, it seems that he still has the potential to reach his highest point or peak. Also, because golf involves so much mental concentration, it seems that Tiger's performance has improved. Perhaps he has found some closure and escape from the scandal and can now get back in the game.
3. Will a sixth Master’s win, the first since 2005, improve Tiger’s image? Tiger has been faced with scrutiny because of his personal life fumbles. Can a win at the Master’s begin to re-pave a new path for the previous number one golfer?
Yes and no. Tiger will always have his fans, and his 'haters'. I don't care for the man, so I will also never care if he wins a Master's tournament. However, I don't think a win will hurt him.
Yes, absolutely. How could a person concentrate let alone play with so much negative controversy? I think it was in Tiger's best interest for his image to step out of the spotlight for a little while. I think his case is a bit out of sight out of mind. I would assume that a well-structured PR team devised his 'injuries' to help get him back on the track to success in the future.
5. Will Tiger catch Jack Nicklaus’ current record of 18 major championships? Considering this is opinion based with no correct answer, please use examples to support your answer.
I have no idea? Sure, anything is possible right?
1. Do you believe Tiger Wood’s Performance in recent events can justify how he will play under the microscope of the most prestigious golf tournament of the year? Do you feel Tiger is more prepared for this tournament due to the magnitude of the event?
ReplyDeleteI don't really know much about Golf. But from what I've read I'd say yes, that his recent performance will be justified when he plays in the Masters. Also feel that he is prepared for this tournament.
2. If Tiger successfully dominates the field during the four-day tournament at Augusta and wins the Masters tournament, does this define his career as bouncing back?
Yes. I think that if he won it would be is bounce back for sure. It would be a major accomplishment, and even though he has had his downfalls over the recent years, he is not going anywhere and needs to make his come back eventually. this may be it.
3. Will a sixth Master’s win, the first since 2005, improve Tiger’s image? Tiger has been faced with scrutiny because of his personal life fumbles. Can a win at the Master’s begin to re-pave a new path for the previous number one golfer?
Yes. If he won the sixth Master's win, he would definitely be improving his image. He would be re-paving a new path because he has shown that he had his time to cope with his downfalls and rise above his personal life problems, but now it is time to come back and make his new image.
I'm sure he was dealing with his physical problems, but I'm sure if it was something small, he wouldn't mind backing out with a added push from his personal life problems.
5. Will Tiger catch Jack Nicklaus’ current record of 18 major championships? Considering this is opinion based with no correct answer, please use examples to support your answer.
Yeah, probably. He is starting to make his come back now and I feel like once he starts he will be on a roll. (Hopefully that makes sense since I don't really know much about golf!)
1. Do you believe Tiger Wood’s Performance in recent events can justify how he will play under the microscope of the most prestigious golf tournament of the year? Do you feel Tiger is more prepared for this tournament due to the magnitude of the event?
ReplyDelete-Golf is a sport that my dad and brother follow. I think that with that I know a little bit about Tiger Woods and his performances. I think that with what he has been through with the recent events will justify how he plays. Everyone’s eyes are going to be on him. He is the one to pick because he is Tiger Woods. For someone who doesn’t follow the sport when I think of golf I think of Tiger Woods. With that I do think Tiger is one that will be okay under the pressure that he seems to be taking on during this Master’s tournament.
2. If Tiger successfully dominates the field during the four-day tournament at Augusta and wins the Masters tournament, does this define his career as bouncing back?
-I do think that if Tiger does come out on top at during this tournament it will be a step in the right direction for his career. Yes, I would say that it could be called a bounce back with his career. He has been out of the loop for a while. He needs to make a name for himself again in the Gold world.
3. Will a sixth Master’s win, the first since 2005, improve Tiger’s image? Tiger has been faced with scrutiny because of his personal life fumbles. Can a win at the Master’s begin to re-pave a new path for the previous number one golfer?
-Yes it will improve his image because with that win he will be able to talk about that and not the events that have been occurring.
- I think that as a professional athlete, Tiger just was not ready to get back into the Golf scene. He mental was not ready to perform and with that he didn’t want to kill his reputation even more with a horrible appetence of the sport that he is a born natural at.
5. Will Tiger catch Jack Nicklaus’ current record of 18 major championships? Considering this is opinion based with no correct answer, please use examples to support your answer.
-I have no idea to be completely honest. If this gets explained in class I might be able to comment.
