Welcome to BCOM 316

See the link below regarding the behavior of different age groups on line. Please review and make some notes / comments as to whether or not you personally fit into the profile of a millenial. Where do you differ? Why? How about the other age groups? Does the research seem to fit those you know in those groups? Why or Why not?

  1. I believe that I do fit into the profile of a millennial. Ever since I can remember I have been on a computer. I learned the usages when I was in elementary school. My everyday life has been revolved around the internet. Based on the blog I do not really differ on the stats that were recorded. As we grow in age people are taking note that more and more people are using the internet for their daily lives. The social media is a huge part of that. A lot of young adults are using the social media that is accessible for them to help them find their future jobs and meet their career goals. For an example of this is Linked In. More and more people are creating their profiles and résumés online for others to see and if they come across on a potential employee they will contact them. When the research shows that ages 18-25 (29%) use Facebook, standing true. Facebook allows for this age group to stay in touch via the internet with the people that they attended high school and college with. I do believe that the research seems to fit those I know in the groups because my mom just learned how to use the internet only a couple years ago. Where as my dad, who is a business man is on the internet all day long looking up research for is job. Looking at the results of the usage of Twitter seems realistic because this is a social network site to the ages of 26-34 (30%) allows them to tweet about a specific topic, which allows other to find the topic and express interest. A lot of company’s are using this site because it allows them publicity to their company and their products.

  2. After reading the articles on different behaviors of age groups on line, I have seen some things that surprised me and some that havent. Being a millennial it is true that I have grown up knowing how to use a computer and have been introduced to many of the social networks at a young age. Many people in my generation use them for entertainment and connecting with people but are know using them more to get jobs and connect with different companies. I feel that this is a great thing and that it will expand peoples job search quite at bit. The information shown to me has only surprised me in how many older generations are using these social networks,I think this is great. This research seems to fit the age groups very well, I also think the in the years to come the generations using social media will become younger and younger, and also the older generations such as the 60 plus will have a higher rating becauase they will have started using comupters and social media at a younger age unlike the generation now.

  3. This was shocking to me. I feel that the Millennial Generation, or my generation is higher users of social media specifically Facebook and Twitter. Twitter in the past year has blown up as a social media entity especially with the millennial generation. Twitter also allows everyday people to follow celebrities and their personal accounts. This gives it more a personal effect especially since younger generations are more likely to join to follow their favorite celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Snooki, Rob Gronkowski, President Obama, and Miley Cyrus to name a few of Twitter's top celebrities that are followed. Additionally I feel the statistics of millennial user's checking social media only once a day is not accurate. We live in an information age and thanks to smartphones, we now have the ability to be online 24/7. We are mobile hubs. I know for me personally I have my Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn on my phone and i can check them, post to them at any moment of the day. To me LinkedIn would seem to have the highest of older users as it can serve as a networking site specifically for job search. Facebook is a way to keep in touch with friends from afar and Twitter is a drop of the hatch information site. I know I get my news from Twitter following such sites as CNN ESPN and MSNBC.

  4. After reviewing the information displayed in the article regarding how different age groups interact with online media, I remain curious as to where and how some of this data was accumulated. Although some information seems to fit the normal trends I would expect, in some cases the data runs astray from the mundane concept of what certain ages' online usage is defined as. For instance, it was surprising to find that according to this data the age group ranging from 18-24 is the second smallest age group that utilizes social web media. According to the chart age group 55-64 utilizes social media such as Facebook and Twitter more than age group 18-24. Another shocking piece of data displayed on the chart was that the average uasage time for individuals that fall under the Millenial Generation is only 23 minutes. I feel that a reasonable assumption would illude to much higher average usage time per time. I wouldn't categorize myself as heavy user of social media as compared to my peres, however, I most likely accumulate over 23 minutes of usage time on Facebook per day due to mobile usage. Perhaps the chart has yet to be updated to include such facets of online usage. In regard to avenues of obtaining news, I am confident that it has become a generational phenomenon to check current news while simultaneously checking other online websites. I am not surprised at all that Yahoo.com has become the most prevelant news source due to the interest factors that remain in their articles. I am one of these individuals who tend to browse through Yahoo.com news headings.

  5. Seeing the information about the Millennial Generation it seems to fit in with what I have seen. I have been brought up with the internet and I know more than my parents who are not part of the Millennial Generation. There are many times that I am asked to assist them with doing something online or with their smartphones but as I said they were not brought up on this technology like I have been. While I do fit in with many of the categories I have realized that I serf the internet more for networking rather than trying to reconnect with old friends. Sites like Facebook and LinkedIn for me are ways to keep in touch with old friends and in the case of LinkedIn to connect with potential employers and people who can help me in my search for a job. The place that I differ is Twitter. I just recently joined however it has not grabbed me like Facebook did rather I just follow the people and organizations that interest me. I don't use it to spread my thoughts and feelings but rather to stay caught up on current events and people whose opinions I find interesting.

  6. The Social Era has taken over

    I find it fascinating that the Generation X (34 - 45 years old) has the highest percentage with 25% for interacting on the social web. In my vision and thought it should be the Millenials. I mean afterall we were the first ones who were raised on the Internet, but as we can see people adapt and follow trends faster than the blink of an eye.

    Me being a Millenial I access social network sites mainly through my smartphone. Rather than staying on it for a long time I access it on a higher frequency but do not stay on it more than 2 minutes each time.

    I believe that smartphones have had a major impact on Millenials using the Internet and social network sites and I can only see it developing more and more in the future.

    In my opinion the baby boomers will be much more involved and engaged than the Millenials. They will take this digital world to the next step.

    Growing up I did not have a smart phone or an I- Pad for school until I was 16 years old and I believe my generation is the last one that got to play outside on the playground instead of texting and commenting on Facebook while they were kids.

    Now days I believe Google, Facebook and Apple are taking over the digital world. Thats why I find it very hard to believe that only 10% of Millenials get their news on Goolgle and 20% get it on Yahoo.

    I always use Google and Facebook, these are my only sources apart from when it comes to more serious topics then I prefer USA today or the Economist. I actually believed nobody uses Yahoo anymore, I guess I was mistaken.

    I used another site to dig in a little more : www.pewinternet.org. We used this website during last year in a class called "Game Based Marketing" to collect all our data.

    It rose my interest to see that over time there has been a 15% increase for the Generation X for using social networks.

    When looking at younger boomers (46 - 55) and older boomers (56 - 64) the increase has been significantly more (25%).

    Do you really think the Millenials will be as large of a user of the Social Networks as the baby boomers ?

    Is it possible that their interest might not be social networking mad web browsing; do they even have a choice?

    Are they going to take technology to the next level ?

    How will they adapt to this overinformative digital planet?

  7. After looking over the social media graphics, I've had a few different reactions. In some ways I do believe that I fit into the Millennial Generation, but at the same time I was surprised to see a few statistics, given the information that I know about my peers. I fit myself into the statistics in the facts that I use the internet to create social networking profiles, to use the wireless internet away from home, and to use twitter. I am extremely surprised to see that 20% of people in my generation use the internet to make videos of themselves and 14% use it for twitter. I would imagine a much lower number for the number of people who use it to take videos of themselves, and a much higher number who use twitter. Next, I definitely use the internet more than 23 minutes a day. I think that since it's an average and the age group varies from 16-32 it could possibly make sense. When I'm older, closer to my thirties, I might not want to spend time on the internet after a long work day. I might rather spend it with my family. That's possibly why the average is so low, but I think that people from age 16 to at least 22 spend MANY more hours on the internet in a day than 23 minutes. I do get most of my news through the internet, either hearing it first on facebook on twitter leading me to look on News websites. Otherwise, I get my news on Google, in which the average is 10% for others. I think that most of the people that are not in my generation would be my parents or other people their age, and I agree that all of the statistics seem to fit for them. Over the past couple of years it has been more popular to see parents on facebook. I'm a little surprised about twitter, I would think that only the Millennial Generation and younger uses it.

  8. When reading this article, I definitely felt the information was a bit skewed or not as 'in tune' to the daily lifestyles of the Millennial generation. I would think that the age distribution of the social web would be much higher for the 18-24 age bracket. I was shocked to see 35-44 year old individuals holding a higher percentage in this category. I have approximately 900 Facebook friends, and I make a constant effort to update and clean up my connections on a regular basis. I try to remain connected to those who I still see/know, whether it be through school, home, my study away program, or work. The majority of these friends fall within this 18-24 age group. Perhaps I am living in a bubble, and that there really is a higher representation of other generations on the web. After some thought, I realized that Facebook was once a social networking site for students in college. Now that these students have 'grown-up', they perhaps carried the habit of using a social network to connect to others with them into their professional lives. Maybe the Millennials are the copy cats to the trend, and Generation X are the innovators of this new social interaction.

    I personally do not identify myself as a Millennial. I am always behind in the latest technology, and in a way despise technology and the internet. Those who know me well usually hear me complain about countless and mundane e-mails, Facebook notifications, and thousands upon thousands of Twitter posts. It can be overwhelming, and many times I would much prefer to go directly to a person and have a face-to-face conversation.

    Before I bash this statistical information entirely, I will agree that the age-based behavior on Facebook was very accurate. I think sometimes Facebook is a space to vent, as 13-25 year olds are very egocentric. The site provides a canvas for immediate gratification or sympathy. For a 15 year old, nearly every life milestone or event is a tragedy. Facebook allows for everyone to pause and take a moment to feel bad for the teenage girl who got dumped at her prom and then wrote some sappy music lyrics to truly represent how her life is over.

  9. I feel like my personally fits in the profile of the millennial. Because when I was growing up I cant remember when the Internet wasn’t a big part. I have had a smart phone for years now, way before my parents ever got one. They just got iPhones and its funny because they call me everyday asking how to download apps or how to put music on there phone. And it would take them hours to do it and I would help them in seconds. I feel like the stats about the LinkedIn account are right because I just made one and a looked for people in my area and they are all older. Yes I feel like the info fits the people I no in the groups. I feel like Facebook has went down to younger people as the times have changed and everyone has a Facebook. But all the rest of the groups I could see fitting well.

  10. I think that I am definitely a millenial, but I am not in the sense that I hardly ever keep up with the news. I guess I don't keep up wih the news because social networks put the news right at my figertips.

    It was interesting to me that the article stated that many Twitter users are older than my age group because I feel like my age group is startingto thrive on Twitter. I definitely feel that the younger generation rules the roost on facebook and that the generation of people ages fortyand older are starting to thrive on facebook as well.

    i constantly question whether or not my generation has an addiction to social networking, but I truly believe that our technological nature is a result of the way we were brought up. There is no question, though, that this is a very thought provoking topic.

  11. Personally, I found this information to be somewhat startling. I was extremely surprised to see that the most popular age group was the 35-44. I definitely thought that it would be the 18-24 bracket. Along this same line of thinking, I was shocked to see the average ages of users on the social networking sites, particularly Facebook and Twitter. The LinkedIn average was less startling because its a more professional based site. I haven't even heard of Bebo, so I wasn't too surprised to see that the average age was younger. I thought the age-based behavior was pretty much on par. I'm friends with a few of my younger cousins on Facebook, and their profiles are often hard for me to look at simply because of the frequent emotional status updates. I don't identify myself as a Millennial. Our class on Tuesday was the first time that I had even heard the phrase. Although I do text and use both Facebook and Twitter on an almost daily basis, I take pride in knowing that I can still connect in person with the people around me. I find it most frustrating when I am trying ot have a conversation with someone and it seems like they aren't even paying attention to me because they're staring at the screen of their phones. Isn't the purpose of all this social media to be able to connect with people? What happens when you become too involved in the internet and lose touch with the face to face time? Sometimes, I like to challenge myself to leave my phone away while out to eat with someone, or even simply during conversations. Although they may not notice the difference, I know that I do. It gives face to face interaction more meaning. More recently, I've even heard of a dinner challenge. Each person at the meal has to take their phone out and place it on the table. The first person to give in and reach for their phone has to pay for the bill. As a college student, I understand that everyone might not be able to foot the bill, but I think its an interesting idea, especially if there were some other repercussions for it.

  12. After reading over the information provided, I have come to learn I am a member of the millennial group, those who were born between the years 78-94. I do however; remember growing up in a time when neither my peers nor I were reliant on the cell phone or emails. As 6th grade approached, my academic curriculum was completely changed by technology, as the computer became a key component in how we learn today. While reviewing the different social networking data, I found it very surprising to learn that adolescences are not the majority users of social networking. Rather, the age group of 35-44 is the majority of users in the social media who take up 25%. The other statistic I was new to is Yahoo is the source of 20% of online news for Millennial’s where I was under the impression CNN or the TIMES would have been the majority holder in that category. Facebook shows to be a prominent source for social networking where the average age is 38 years. Social networking is going to continue to grow while gathering in new members by making accessibility easier and usage of sites elementary and personal to increase the interaction of mass media via the computer. Given the ability of the smart phones we have today (i.e. iPhone, blackberry, droid) the accessibility of sites and social media will only grow because of the ability to log on to any media any time of the day from the palm of our hands.

  13. The information provided seems to me to be a little surprising. I didn't think so many older people used social networking. I now know that I am in the millennial and it makes perfect sense. Since the invention of smart phones, it has made the world easily accessible to the internet and other social networking sites. My question is, "What are 30-40 year old individual doing on these social networking sites?" From the outside looking in, you would think the age group from 18-24 would be the most popular age group.
